Travis, the protagonist, starts a video journal and questions his identity as an artist, feeling disconnected from his passion. He hopes to regain his sense of purpose by defeating Alexis, an A.I. opponent, in a chess game. The interaction between Travis and Alexis, the A.I., unfolds in a routine game where Travis faces continual defeat. Despite Alexis consistently winning, Travis engages in another game, questioning the significance of choosing sides in chess. He hands the white king piece to Alexis, but it falls through her hand, symbolizing Travis's unexpected victory. This moment brings Travis a small triumph, signifying a shift in the ongoing dynamic between him and the A.I. The scene captures the sense of disillusionment and longing for significance felt by Travis, using the chess game as a metaphor for his quest to reclaim purpose and identity. The unexpected outcome hints at a potential change or defiance against the predetermined pattern, offering a glimpse of hope amid Travis's internal struggle. How can we visualize and present oral histories from the IWM collections in an immersive? multi-screen, surround sound - space? Our approach to this was initially inspired by the films we watched while at the IWM's Big Picture Show, specifically Al Mutanabbi Street, Animals and War, Remembrance. What came to mind, predominantly, was mixing real life footage and filmed acting with graphics and 3D environments. There were also films like Ian Hubert's Dynamo Dream for the VFX and Ram Ramesh Sharma's Kaafiron Ki Namaaz for the story we wanted to tell.
